The Profound Autism Summit is a two-day conference bringing together leaders from the areas of research, medicine, treatment, advocacy, and education to discuss the needs of those with Profound Autism across disciplines and throughout the lifespan.

Profound Autism refers to autistic individuals who have significant intellectual and communication challenges, requiring 24/7 support. The Lancet Commission first proposed the term "Profound Autism" in their December 2021 report. This new classification highlights the distinct needs of this population, giving families, advocates, and providers a way to describe and help others understand the specific needs of this group.

The Summit arose from a collaboration of two non-profit organizations, Nashoba Learning Group (NLG) and the Profound Autism Alliance (PAA).

Founded by CEO Liz Martineau in 2002, NLG has been a dedicated advocate for individuals on the autism spectrum for over two decades. With a specialized day school and adult day program, NLG primarily serves individuals with Profound Autism, providing tailored support to meet their unique needs. Guided by a commitment to dignity, safety, and independence, NLG strives to enhance the quality of life for every student and member.

PAA, founded by Judith and Amy Ursitti, is committed to the recognition of the unique challenges that people with profound autism and intellectual disability experience. PAA’s mission is to improve their health and connection through inclusive research and focused advocacy that will result in meaningful services and supports.

The Profound Autism Summit, held just once a year, brings together families, caregivers, and professionals to learn and connect, but we know not everyone can attend in person. That’s why we created Profound Village, an online learning community that provides year-round access to experts across various fields and fosters meaningful connections among parents, caregivers, and professionals.
